Carnivals are held throughout the season from October to March for the Under 8 to 10 and Under 11 to 15 age groups. These nipper carnivals are a chance for nippers to have fun and test their skills competing against other nippers from the Sunshine Coast and QLD in a supportive environment.
This season Nipper Carnivals are an expected part of participating in Coolum Nippers with all nippers encourage to attend as many carnivals as possible.
This also means that all nippers are required to complete the competition distance at proficiencies at the beginning of the season.
Parents are required to complete carnival nominations for their nipper/s via our Junior Lifesavers Coolum Beach Team App account.
All carnival updates and briefings will be released via Team App notifications including important dates for the closing of nominations, carnival bulletins, and last minute changes. Most carnival nominations will close around 2 weeks prior to the carnival date.
Carnival dates can be found on the Event Calendar on Team App.
Coolum Nippers will cover the nomination fee for competitors who qualify for State carnival events at Branch carnival. Nippers who wish to compete at States but have not qualified must pay the relevant nomination fees for each event.
Essential carnival volunteers
All clubs are required to fulfil ratios for carnival officials and water safety officers depending on the number of children competing across the various age groups. We encourage all parents of nippers who wish to attend carnivals to take up a role to help out.
All clubs must provide 1 official for every 8 nippers nominated. To become an official please see your Age Manager or Nipper committee members for details. More info here - Volunteer Positions.
We must provide 1 water safety volunteer for every 15 nippers nominated. To become a water safety volunteer see your Age Managers or Nipper Committee members for details. More info here - Volunteer Positions.

How long do the carnivals go for?
Carnivals are held on either a Saturday or Sunday and can go from 7.45 am to 3 or 4 pm.
U8 - U10 carnivals are a great way to introduce your nipper into the carnival situation as they are non-competitive and encourage every nipper to participate as much as they like.
U11 - U14 carnivals can be held over one or two days, Saturday and/or Sunday. The emphasis for these carnivals is on competition and skill building in a friendly, fun, and supportive environment.
What happens at carnivals?
Arrival time for carnivals is usually 6-6.30 am for warm up and a 7.45 am carnival start. It is important to arrive early to allow time to check in with your Age Manager, sign your nipper on, and that your nipper has time to participate in warm-up activities.
Please note - this is particularly important for team events so that the Team Manager can enter the team as per nominations or make adjustments if needed.
Finish time for carnivals can be anywhere from 1 pm to 4 pm. This is dependent upon many factors such as competitor numbers, surf conditions, tide, weather, etc please be prepared for a full day.
If you cannot attend a carnival you have nominated for, you MUST contact your Age Manager or the Team Manager prior to the carnival day to advise by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or via Team App.
What to bring to a carnival:
- Club swimmers + Pink Rashie + Nipper Competition Cap (no uniform = no competition)
- Sun protection - sunscreen, hat, and protective clothing - Good sun protection is very important as a lot of time is spent in the sun during carnivals.
- Chair and towel
- Food for the day and plenty of water - There is often food available to purchase at the event but sometimes it is difficult for competitors to leave the beach to get food. We recommend bringing plenty of snacks and a packed lunch.
- Raincoat and spare clothes - you will be very glad you packed them.
Important note - You must always bring your competition cap and pink high-vis rashie to carnivals these item are essential. If you don't have them you cannot compete.
Look for the Coolum Beach SLSC marque when you arrive, this is where you will spend the best part of the day with the other families. All nippers are expected to stay under or near our marque as much as possible as Age Managers need to be able to quickly collect nippers when marshaling for events.
No responsibility will be taken by Coolum Nippers or their volunteers for nippers missing events because they are not in the club marque area.
Parents are not allowed in the competition area at any time – the competition area will be clearly marked. The Age Managers will look after your child whilst in this area and there are plenty of vantage points to watch your child outside of the competition arena.
In order for your child/children to participate in carnivals at least one parent or older sibling MUST volunteer for one of the following duties for each carnival your child attends. Your help is greatly appreciated and needed for our club to attend carnivals.
Each carnival requires:
- Age Managers - at least 2 per age group
- Carnival officials - it is a requirement that we provide 1 for every 8 competitors
- Water Safety officers - it is a requirement that we provide 1 for every 15 competitors
- Volunteers to pack our club trailer with equipment that is required for the carnival (list will be provided.) - This usually gets done the day before the carnival.
- Volunteers to set up and pack up at the carnival location with all the equipment required from our club trailer.
- Volunteers to unpack the trailer and wash down and pack away equipment back at Coolum Beach surf club after the carnival.
More information on our volunteer positions.
