Surf Life Saver Profile 40 - John Feeney

Published: February 07, 2024 Last Updated: February 07, 2024

Welcome John Feeney and thanks for sharing with us

So let’s get deep and meaningful straight up

Q - How long have you been in Coolum Surf Life Saving Club and what motivated you to volunteer your time?

We moved to Coolum in May 2022, and I got my Bronze later that year in Dec.  Volunteering for me is an opportunity to give something back to the society that has been so good to me over my many years, and to make new friends; lifesaving is a motivation to keep fit – oh and what’s not to love about the water.

Q – Is your experience so far what you thought it would be?

Way way beyond expectations!  Everyone in the club is so friendly and welcoming, I’m always learning new skills and its just great being on the beach.

It blows me away every time when I’m on patrol and a member of the public comes up and thanks us for keeping an eye out for them.

On a lighter side

Q -  Where did you grow up? (assuming you’ve grown up)

I grew up in Brisbane (not moving back though)

Q – What’s the best job you’ve ever had?

I’ve been lucky that “most” of my jobs have been pretty good in their own way.  I think my best experience was leading the Program that upgraded Queensland Health’s to windows 10 and Office365.  Its such a diverse organisation from the health clinics on Cape York and Torres Straight through to SCUH and RBWH. I learnt so much and the people are so dedicated.

Q -  Any nicknames?

Not really – Del calls me Johnno so it’s probably that!

Q - Any hobbies?

Photography and bushwalking

Q -  Favourite Music / musician / Band?

Lots of bands, Pink Floyd and Dire Straits were undoubtedly two of the best bands in history, but otherwise spotify tells me I like Indie Rock.

Q - Can you cook and what’s your favourite dish to prepare?

I can cook – in winter its Risotto – the constant stirring is very therapeutic.

Q- Final & life defining question… Pineapple on Pizza, Yes or No??

Live and let live.

Thank you John

Support Coolum Surf Club

Not ready to become part of Coolum Surf Club but still want to help?

It takes a lot of money to run a surf lifesaving club; from the equipment needed on the beach (vehicles, boards, IRBs, first aid kits, defibrillators etc) to administration and training to facilitate patrolling.

So if you can't join us, support us through one of the following options.

Coolum Beach SLSC Nippers

Does your child want to become a Nipper?

Looking for a fun summer sport where your kids will learn essential surf safety skills, gain confidence in the ocean, and meet new friends?

Coolum Nippers is the answer! Nippers run from the September school holidays to February/March and is open to kids from 5 to 12 yrs.

Not only will they learn surf safety and what surf lifesaving is all about, but also have the opportunity to compete in carnivals and have mid-week training to improve their skills.
