Surf Life Saver Profile of the Week - 3
Published: October 25, 2022 Last Updated: October 25, 2022
Welcome Hazel and thanks for sharing with us
So let’s get deep and meaningful straight up...
Q - How long have you been in Coolum Surf Life Saving Club and what motivated you to volunteer your time?
A - 5 years over a period of time. I did 4 years here as a nipper before moving to America with my family. I’ve been doing Surf Life Saving all my life. Starting as a nipper in New Zealand in the North Island. Then we moved to Australia and I was a nipper at Tannum Sands. I’ve kind of been dragged into volunteering by my family and I love it. I really do.
Q – Is your experience so far what you thought it would be?
A - Coming back to the club I expected to do my patrols and occasionally volunteer for extra events if needed. But now that I’m here and everyone already knows my family and I, I have started rowing with the Surf Boats and doing Water Safety every Sunday and I’m always finding myself at the club wanting to do more.
On a lighter side...
Q – Where did you grow up? (Assuming you’ve grown up)
A - I was born in New Zealand and moved between there and Australia because my dad was in the NZ Defence Force. I t helped me to learn how to meet new people and make friends, especially doing Life Saving throughout. I started high school at Coolum High from years 8-10 and graduated in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2020. We recently moved back to the coast in May and it still feels like home.
Q – What’s the best job you’ve every had?
A - Being only 20 I haven’t had many jobs yet, but I think that waitressing in the US was my favourite. It gave me the opportunity to meet all sorts of different people. I t also helped me improve my hospitality and social skills because I was only getting paid in tips, so I had to be nice to everyone even if they weren’t nice to me.
Q – Any nicknames?
A - Some people like to call me Hazelnut but some clubbies like to call me Lucy’s little sister, which I say I’m a fan of that one.
Q – Favourite Music/Musician/Band
A - I like to listen to all kinds of music but if I have to pick, I’d say either R&B or Country
Q – Can you cook and what’s your favourite dish to prepare?
A - I like to cook sometimes when I’m in the mood. But, nothing beats Mum’s homemade Lasanga.
Q – Final & Life defining Question…. Pineapple on Pizza, Yes or No??
A - Yes… (Yay!)
Thank you Hazel

Support Coolum Surf Club
Not ready to become part of Coolum Surf Club but still want to help?
It takes a lot of money to run a surf lifesaving club; from the equipment needed on the beach (vehicles, boards, IRBs, first aid kits, defibrillators etc) to administration and training to facilitate patrolling.
So if you can't join us, support us through one of the following options.
Coolum Beach SLSC Nippers
Does your child want to become a Nipper?
Looking for a fun summer sport where your kids will learn essential surf safety skills, gain confidence in the ocean, and meet new friends?
Coolum Nippers is the answer! Nippers run from the September school holidays to February/March and is open to kids from 5 to 12 yrs.
Not only will they learn surf safety and what surf lifesaving is all about, but also have the opportunity to compete in carnivals and have mid-week training to improve their skills.
