Our mighty Red Cap Ducks IRB Racing Team competed at Rainbow beach last weekend in Round 4 of the Ocean Roar series and came away with some impressive
results with the total team points finding us in 10th place in a field of 17 clubs.
Saturday saw the preliminary heats and the first showings of a couple of our members.
We welcomed Andrew (Dollarman) to his first carnival. Also Kirra was paired up as crewman for the first time with Ben as her driver for his
first time. We also were able to nominate a record number of 5 Tube Rescue races with swimmer Mitch, Andrew and Ben. Who said “Ducks Cant
Swim”? With entries in under 23, Open Men’s and Masters, the team manager James was on his their toes to ensure that we made it to the
start line of each of the 20 events entered.
All teams competed well on the Saturday with Ben and Kirra successfully getting through their very first race without DQ (although a bit
giddy from multiple circles of the first buoy).
The Team were happy with making 4 of the Grand Finals with the Masters Team of Fred/Mark/Kirra and Shane/Frank/Faith securing a comfortable
2nd in Teams Rescue and Fred with super newbie Andrew and Ben scoring an excellent 4th place in Masters Tube in their first carnival
as a team and our first appearance in a Tube final in many, many years.
Flowing on with our Tube success, superfish Ben swam his way with Caleb and Dan into seventh place in their Grand final of the U23
Tube Rescue. Shane/Frank and Faith rounded out the finals appearances with a creditable 7th place in the Masters Surf final. If
not for an unfortunate wave for Fred and Quinny and an injury to our team hardman Jason, we were looking down the barrel of three
teams in the Surf Final for the very first time! We wish Jason a speedy recovery.
This week is the final round of Ocean Roar at Kirra.
Go the Red Caps!
