Coolum took five crews to the first surf boat carnival of the season, Ron Davis Memorial Carnival, at Tallebudgera and came away with some terrific results.
Despite the surf conditions being extremely challenging on the Saturday, all crews competed well, with placings in all categories on day 1.
By day 2 the conditions improved and our Reserve Grade women and our under 19 men, both brand new crews, dominated their divisions and finished on top after two days of racing. The under 19 men had five wins out of eight starts while the Reserve women were equally strong.
Both of these crews will be in the mix for State selection.
Our two Reserve grade men’s crews and the Bin Chickens Reserve Grade men, finished third on Sunday in 2-3 feet of surf and 15 knots of southerly. This
crew has been hit by injury to their bowman, Ben Murphy, and relied on substitutes all weekend. Good job boys.
Harry Baxter’s Reserves had a hit out but were one short so we saw some of the Reserve ladies and U19 men filling in. There are some very well credentialed rowers in this crew and when they gel, they will be right in the results.
Harry backed up by taking our Masters crew, aptly named the Coolum Survivors, including our Supporters Club President, John Ellingsen and the boys, swept by Harry, took on some difficult surf and made the best of it. Lean back on that oar Harry!
Based on the Talle results, we are in for a terrific season.
Go Red Caps!
