A night of Lifesaving Celebrations
Last Saturday night saw Club President Fred Stokes welcome around 200 of our finest Coolum Beach Lifesavers and family in the Coolum Primary School hall. In a wonderful night of celebrations and acknowledgments of the achievements from the past season, young and experienced Girls, Boys Men and Ladies shared in the awards with over 100 trophies and awards presented to members who had stood out over the past season.
Top award for the night the David Cush Meritorious Trophy went to a very deserving and very popular choice Mick Sell. Mick (aka Batman), has been involved in just about everything this season from Patrols, Competition, Officiating and did a sterling job as our Gear Steward. The Best Club Patrol Members trophy was renamed to acknowledge Dick Lugge and his heroic final rescue. This year it was awarded to new comer and pocket rocket Janina Cook who sadly wasn’t able to be present but was acknowledged for her strength and dependability on patrol racking up over 120 voluntary patrol hours. The Sting Zillman service to Surf Sports trophy was awarded to Sharleen Swan who has for years tirelessly dedicated huge hours officiating on the beach so that both Nippers and Seniors could compete.
The Youth of our club were acknowledged by Meg for their many hours of club and patrol engagement and for their participation in the YIPs program with Oliver and Isaac jointly winning the best Cadet trophy with Faith and Ben splitting the win for most promising Junior Patrol member.
Many sporting achievements were also acknowledged from our awesome Surf Boat rowers with the Coolum Chums –Phoebe, Sophie, Rachel and Erin with sweep Pat McGuire winning the Michael Rutledge Memorial trophy and the Coolum Jettets Kennedi, Abbie, Alison, Maya and sweep Paul “Blingman” Schloss winning the Surf Boat Captains trophy. Fred announced the IRB Racing Team trophy was won by Mark Quinlivan and spoke about how great the team are doing this and last season.
Ernie Burrows then announced the many medals and achievements of the Surf and Sand crew including a couple of near Golds at the Aussies by our awesome Masters ladies - Kate, Emma, Jodie and Heidi who as a collective in the Masters Sprint relay scored silver with Kate “Ohhhh so close” to National Gold in her Flags final.
Mick Sell was also victorious in the prestigious Acer Cameron event for this season and swept the evening with him taking home the inaugural Surf and Sand Trophy. The Kennedy Cup which was presented after a gruelling series of Sunday morning swims and was won by Griffin.
The Champion Patrol Team for this season at the Club Championships was the Magnificent 7 again for the 5th time. Tug of War was won by Patrol 2 and was presented by Sharleen Swan.
One of the many highlights of the night was when Bruce Dunne was presented his Life Members Jacket by fellow Life Member Mick Daly. Bruce was very humble in his acceptance speech and spoke of his affinity to the movement, his club and his family. Our live bad then helped dance away the rest of the evening. Thanks to all our volunteers and club members who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to put this special night on including Pat and the Coolum Primary school for hosting us for the first and certainly not the last time .
Congratulations to everyone for such a fantastic night and an amazing season.

It was great to see the Coolum Beach surf lifesaving club well represented at the weekend Island Charity Swim from Mudjimba to Mooloolaba. Leading the charge Life Member Brett G pulled together a team of 31 people.
The surf club was well represented with eight surf club members. Brett, with fellow Life Member Ian N, Monique H and Evie N completed the full 11 kilometre course with the other surf club members (Louise T, Janina C, Greg B and Di M) participating in the teams.
A test of endurance for all participants, the Island Charity Swim is a major fundraiser for the amazing children at the Nambour and Currimundi Special Schools. The swim was in picture perfect conditions despite a chilly start.
All participants completed the course and vowed that they will be back again next year. Congrats to all of the participants and to the support crews involved.Read More
