Last weekend the Aussie Titles concluded in Perth where our club members held the Red Cap high winning multiple national titles and a bundle of other
medals and near-podium finishes.
Leading the pack was our amazing Surf Board Riding team who after some “Lively” pre-comp training sessions not far from Margaret River, brought home a swag of titles and medals – 4 x Gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Congrats to Bruce D Snr who retained his national longboard title for the third year in succession. Making his early impression as national champion was Finn W who took out the hotly contested male 14 yrs shortboard title. In straight-out finals, Jodie W assisted the clubs overall points by winning both the Short and Longboard events. Team Coach and well-known local identity Paddy L, narrowly missed out on gold, when he secured a silver medal in his masters longboard final. Toby A rounded out the medal haul with a bronze in the 14 yrs shortboard final. Just off the dais with 4th placings in their finals were Will D, Cooper W, Liana W x 2 and Paddy.
Our awesome Beach and Water Masters team finished up with excellent results with 2 x silver and 1 x bronze.
Congrats to our masters beach relay team of Kate T, Emma R, Jodie W and Heidi D for their silver and to Kate for her “oh so close” silver medal in Beach Flags. The photo finish showed only cms in it. Jodie W secured a bronze in her 2km run which was much deserved.
Our Surf Boat teams went from three to two, due to an untimely injury to Gary B in their lead up to the titles. Even though they were no longer competing, John E, Ron T and Bill S still made the huge trek across the country to ensure not only the surf boat made it to the west in time but also delivered the craft needed by the rest of our competitors. It all arrived safely.
Despite our Surf Boat teams of the Reserve Grade Ladies and Reserve Grade Men beating many of the other fancied teams in the heats that featured in the finals, a number of things didn’t go their way as such the carnival was shortened due to impending storms and split official decisions which saw an earlier than expected exit from competition. Surfboat sweep Patrick McGuire said the teams loved every minute of their very first Aussies and were now keener than ever to be back bigger and better at the Aussies next year when it returns to the Gold Coast.
